Understand Michigan’s Online History Search

Michigan State Police says ICHAT allows the public to search criminal-history information maintained by the state. ICHAT does not include warrant information, federal records, tribal records, traffic records, juvenile records, local misdemeanors, or criminal history from other states.

MSP’s reportable repository scope covers felonies and serious misdemeanors punishable by more than 93 days. ICHAT exposes public criminal-history information, not suppressed/nonpublic records; the existing exclusions still apply.

ICHAT is Michigan-specific

The exclusions on the State Police page are part of the meaning of the result; a no-match is not a statement about federal or out-of-state records.

Michigan background-check routes

Need Route Key scope
Review your own public and nonpublic Michigan history MSP personal fingerprint record-check instructions Separate fingerprint submission with a $30 processing fee; results include both public and nonpublic information associated with those fingerprints. Use the linked personal-record-check procedure rather than treating an ICHAT result as a full personal-history review.
Public name-based Michigan history ICHAT Public Michigan State Police criminal-history information
Fingerprint check required by law Authorized fingerprint-based process Used when the governing authority requires fingerprints
Court-file detail Court of conviction Case documents and orders are separate from ICHAT

Use ICHAT carefully

  1. 01
    Collect identifiers

Use exact name, gender and date of birth as requested by the official system.

  2. 02
    Run the Michigan search

Keep the search date and result reference.

The online name-based ICHAT route described by MSP costs $10 per search at checkout. Treat each paid search as a search of the supplied identifiers and the public Michigan repository only.

  3. 03
    Read exclusions

Do not silently expand the result beyond Michigan ICHAT scope.

  4. 04
    Add court research when needed

Use the court file for case-level documents or dispositions.

What a precise result statement sounds like

  • “No public Michigan ICHAT record was returned for the identifiers searched.”
  • “ICHAT returned a Michigan record that should be matched to the correct person before use.”
  • Avoid “no criminal record” unless you can define every source and jurisdiction included.
